PHIL 145

Critical Thinking

This course will examine complex types of reasoning, including statistical judgment, decision making, and causal and analogical thinking. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of concrete examples, evaluating for example the basis for beliefs about ESP, alternative medicine, and astrology. Students will be encouraged to improve their own judgment and decision making by learning about common errors and biases that have been identified by philosophers and psychologists. There will also be extensive discussion on the relation between how people do reason and how they ought to reason.

I had T.Kenyon, and the course was very interesting. The course consisted of 2 essay assignments, a multiple-select (instead of multiple choice) online midterm, where you could not go back to your previous question, and a final exam that consisted of 12 short questions (out of 16 choices) and 4 short 1 paragraph questions and 1 three paragraph question (there was a choice for each question). The assignments and exams required you to know everything from the book (sometimes minute details were tested on). The book is boring to read if you read it after the lectures, because most of the book is covered in the lectures (not the minute details)

The assignments are fairly big and you have to either go to classes or read the text to complete them. Unless you are very interested in philosophy, both of those things are extremely boring.

Really easy, but VERY boring... Don't take it there are better courses to take... Spent two lectures on adding subtracting multiplying and dividing fractions...

If you have Zunic, it's not easy at all and it's insanely boring.

Depending on profs, it could be hard essay-liked midterm/exam or easy bird course.

Depends on who the prof is, this course can be quite "interesting"... Well as least on one of the assignments my prof starts arguing about whether "Dead cats are animals"... WEiRd...
