If you are interested in criminology, you'll probably enjoy this course. That being said, the narrator of the course (if you are taking it online), and the man who conducted the studies that the course is based on continually dehumanizes his sample group subjects throughout the entire section regarding bank robberies. Not to mention, he unnecessarily says a racial slur in at least one module and uses other questionable language when covering the topic. The racial slur was said in the midst of quoting a researcher and it added absolutely nothing to lecture and was completely unnecessary (not that a racial slur is ever necessary). He also refers to the men in his sample group as "losers" and emphasizes the point that these people have nothing going for them. In my opinion, the way he speaks about criminals throughout the course could significantly bias other students who take this course. Please be careful if you take LS 229 and think critically about what the narrator says. |
